November 3, 2020, was a great day for Women. You may not fully agree with everything that Kamala Harris stands for but with this election, she not only broke the glass ceiling but shattered it by making history as the first female Vice President. In fact, not only that, she is the first person of color to be second in command and the highest elected Asian American in history.  This is a milestone for women that will be felt for generations. Kamala Harris had a powerful message when she addressed our nation: “But while I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last.  Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.” We must acknowledge the importance of this. Girls will grow up knowing a woman has actual power.  No matter what your political beliefs are, and you are entitled to them, this is a monumental occasion for women.

There has been much progress for women in government.  Many women were elected into office this year and more women ran for office in 2020 than any other time in American history.  Here is a rundown of some of the candidates who were elected in 2020.

In New Mexico, a woman of color was elected in its three congressional districts.  Rep. Deb Haaland was re-elected in the 1st district and Rep.Yvette Herrell and Dem. Teresa Leger Fernandez was elected for their first terms.  Sarah McBride was elected to Delaware’s Senate and will become the highest-ranking transgender state senator in US history.  Cory Bush won Missouri’s 1st congressional district.  She will be the first Black woman to represent Missouri in Congress.  Kim Jackson will become Georgia’s first openly LGBTQ+ Senator and one of the few Senators in the Country.  Marina Turner is the country’s first Muslim, non-binary lawmaker to be elected to Oklahoma’s state legislature.

Let’s Congratulate all these wonderful women who broke through the glass ceiling and acknowledge the beginning of change for a more inclusive America where all women will be walking on the broken glass of those who came before them.
